FRAMEWORK, new installation and paintings 2020

New installation and paintings by Sadie Chandler

Sadie Chandler is a Melbourne based artist who has exhibited her work widely throughout Australia and overseas. Her work has played an important part in the contemporary art scenes of Sydney and Melbourne for more than twenty years and is represented in major public, private and corporate collections.

After studying art Melbourne at Phillip Institute of Technology (1984-1986), Victorian College of the Arts (1989-1990) and Sydney College of the Arts M.V.A. (2005-2006), Chandler spent years visiting art museums and collections around the world. Her practice
is focused on painting and the history of representation.

The Framework series exhibited at Sofitel Melbourne On Collins is an installation of wallpaper (as seen in the archway) and paintings sketched in ink on paper. The images cover the walls and archway of the Sofitel foyer to become a framework for memories of all the art works from all the museums at once — a massive and immersive collection.

In Chandler’s hand-drawn dynamic wallpaper, paintings and objects embody a range of heavy lines, flat areas of colour and a slight attempt at realism. Indeed, it has been described as cartoon-like. These bold graphically powerful installations are spontaneously
executed using a range of felt tip pens and brushed ink, the hundreds of drawings produce a visual sensory experience surrounding the viewer as one walks through into the hotel.

The subject for the wallpaper works derive from diverse art objects (painting and sculpture) found in public and private collections as well as pop images from mass media. Works are jostled together, coded and compressed in continuous fields. The work is
ephemeral and will be destroyed once the wallpaper is removed.

Sadie Chandler is represented by Charles Nodrum Gallery, Melbourne.
