In 2019, the Metro Tunnel Creative Program ran workshops with numerous organisations across the Parkville University and Bio Medical precinct to come up with a theme that resonated with all institutions in the area. The organisations agreed that showcasing the precinct’s ‘unsung heroes’ would be a great way to share some noteworthy stories that people may not have heard.

Around 20 organisations contributed information, and these were turned into stories by local writer Sonja Dechian. The stories were then given to local illustrators who engaged with the written pieces to bring them to life in their own creative way.

The stories can be downloaded here: Parkville Storytelling

The Organisations that contributed stories included:

  • Graduate House

  • Bio 21 Institute

  • Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne

  • Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity

  • Walter & Eliza Hall Institute

  • Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre

  • Murdoch Children’s Research Institute

  • Royal Women’s Hospital

  • Ambulance Victoria

  • Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health

  • Royal Melbourne Hospital

  • The University of Melbourne

  • The Poche Centre for Indigenous Health

  • Four of the stories feature the inspiring Australian women that the Metro Tunnel named their tunnel boring machines after.

  • Joan Kirner - Australian politican and Premier of Victoria from 1990-1992

  • Meg Lanning - Captain of the Australian Women's Cricket Team

  • Alice Appleford - A First World War military nurse awarded the Florence Nightingale Medal

  • Millie Peacock -The first woman elected to the Victorian Parliament in 1933

The Artists who illustrated the stories:

  • Alice Lindstrom is a Melbourne based artist who works primarily in paper collage, using hand crafted cut and paste techniques and painting to create textured and layered illustrations.

  • Mark Conlan is an illustrator originally from Dublin, Ireland, currently living and working in Melbourne.

  • Antra Švarcs is an illustrator from Melbourne. She enjoys the challenge of distilling complex subject matter to its essence.

  • Janelle Barone is a Melbourne based illustrator and designer. She uses digital techniques to create colourful works inspired by comic books, ukiyo-e and documentary photography.
