DONNA MARCUS – RIPPLE

8 December – 28 April 2024

Ripple is a discrete exhibition from Donna Marcus's archive presented at Sofitel Gold Coast, Broadbeach, coinciding with her major exhibition Radiate at HOTA (Home of the Arts, Gold Coast).

Donna Marcus has been exhibiting work for more than three decades and enjoys a national and international presence with both her domestic and museum-based works and public art commissions which notably can be found in front of the Brisbane’s Treasury Casino (Reddacliff Place) as well as other works in Gladstone, Hobart, Sydney, regional Victoria, China and Saudi Arabia to mention only a few.

Donna's brightly coloured installations involve the habitual collecting of pre-loved brightly coloured anodised aluminium kitchenware: teapots, saucepan lids, jelly and cake moulds, steamers, bottle re-sealers, colanders and so forth. In the artist’s hands these once familiar objects present powerful abstract forms when reconfigured into grids, diamonds, and squares often creating jewel-like and precious forms that radiate off the wall.

Marcus is also interested in the powerful and evocative narratives that viewers often create around these works based on their own memories making her work immediately accessible to a broad audience. With the artist’s aesthetic instincts, she uses these unorthodox materials to create wall, floor and free-standing sculptures of great irony and dynamic power, celebrating and ultimately defying their intrinsic form and function.

This exhibition is presented by Global Art Projects, independent art curators and consultants in collaboration with Gallery Sally Dan-Cuthbert, Sydney. www.gallerysallydancuthbert.com
