PLANET ABSTRACT, 2022

A suite of new paintings, a gathering of planetary haloes, gentle fizzing endless explosions of energy

In association with Niagara Galleries in Melbourne, Sofitel Melbourne On Collins is delighted to present PLANET ABSTRACT, a collection of recent paintings by Angela Brennan.

Painted during the Melbourne Covid-19 lockdowns this remarkable collection of pictures is true Brennan; joyous, buoyant, raucous, contemplative and just plain fun!

Traditionally the genesis of Angela’s paintings is largely organic and always seeking that element of surprise and these works are true to form. The suite of paintings presented here, in Planet Abstract, is inspired by a revisiting of forms and motifs that the artist employed early in her practice. The possibilities that abstraction allows make for an unfurling of colour and forms such as circles and untethered geometric shapes that are overlaid and interwoven with floating lines and structured grids. They come out of no particular physical space, rather the compositions ‘arrive’ and are made real in paint. These elements enter into dialogue, creating endless visual conversations through the painterly language of abstraction.

Angela has worked as a professional artist for over 30 years and has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Australia and internationally. She has had major solo exhibitions at the Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA), and the Ian Potter Museum of Art, University of Melbourne. Angela has been awarded several artist’s studio residencies, most recently at the British School of Rome, 2015, and was artist in residence at the University of Sydney Archaeological excavations in Cyprus in 2016. Angela holds a BA, Painting, RMIT, a BA, University of Melbourne, and a PhD, Visual Arts, Monash University.

Angela Brennan is represented in major public, private and corporate collections here and overseas and is represented by Niagara Galleries and Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery Sydney.
