California Tunics and Sofitel Aprons

“I can and do only draw what I see.  I can and only draw being in the present moment.”

In 2017 the Gosial Wlodarczak carried out a three-week residency at BoxoPROJECTS in Joshua Tree, California where she undertook a range of projects. One of them, California Tunics, was the further development of a project she had commenced in June 2016, the 25th wedding anniversary with her husband and collaborator artist/photographer Longin Sarnecki. To celebrate that occasion the artist made a collection of tunics for herself and Longin which she later used in a 24-hour drawing performance at Sofitel Melbourne On Collins. The drawings on the tunics reveal the imprint of energy radiated onto each of us by the objects and beings that surround us.

California Tunics and Sofitel Aprons displays the works that have grown out of these experience and includes three new works from Wlodarczak's Tunic series called Sofitel Apron Michael, Carlo and Erik. During a one and half hour drawing performance, Gosia invited three members of the Sofitel Corporate Events staff to wear the hotel's aprons while she drew on them, capturing the Sofi's Lounge interior space and the action during high tea time.

Melbourne based artist Gosia Wlodarczak (b. 1959) is a Polish-born artist whose work attempts to document and archive our existence through the practice of drawing.  She graduated with a aster of Fine Arts with Distinction from Poznan Academy of Fine Arts.  She arrived in Australia in 1996 and now lives and works in Melbourne.

Wlodarczak's work has been described a cross-disiplinary drawing.  In the artist's hands drawing is used as the basis for an exploration into performance, installation, sound and more recently film.  Her work is comprised primarily of performance-based durational drawings in which she commits to the line only what she sees. In this way she captures time and space, translating the energy of each moment into the line, thereby creating a record of what took place in any given situation. Her works are held in national, state and regional gallery collections and a range of corporate and private collections both in Australia and overseas.

Gosia Wlodarczak has previously been an Artist-in-Residence at Sofitel Melbourne On Collins and Sofitel Sydney Wentworth.  She has had a fruitful and ongoing relationship with Sofitel Melbourne On Collins which has resulted in a number of exhibitions and performances at the hotel.
