BOTH SIDES MIND

Sofitel Melbourne On Collins is delighted to support and work with Craft Victoria to showcase the work of emerging graduate craft practitioners and designers through Craft’s FRESH! project which has been running since 1993. FRESH! celebrates and promotes the next wave of Victorian art school university graduates in contemporary craft and design.

In this recent body of work Melbourne based graduate designer Nigel Vogler has been inspired by a series of psychiatric evaluation journals from the 1950s, studying a number of individuals‘ cognitive behaviour. What he finds so inspiring and relatable is the way these individuals could take the discomfort of their mental circumstances, and turn their rationale into the creative thought process and create an outlet to work through the mind’s obstacles.

With Vogler's significant working knowledge of fashion design and his solid background in tailoring and design, ‘Both Sides Mind’ is a still display of select garments from his recent graduate collection, and new pieces created for this exhibition. Vogler explores his own experiences with this topic and the outcome is a range of garments characterised by exaggerated proportion, silhouette and hand-worked embellishment.

Vogler also showcases blind contour illustrations. Being in a quiet dark space, the concept behind this style of drawing is that one is able to completely clear the mind, and not seeing the page eliminates having to concentrate on any exact detail.

Nigel Vogler was the recipient of Craft Victoria’s FRESH! Sofitel Emerging Craft Practitioner’s Award (2018).
