No PlaceInk Drawings 2017-2018

Margaret Manchee’s latest collection of works - featuring ink drawings combined with print making techniques - explores the recurring motifs of circles, cycles and continuity as she explains;

The title of my show, No Place is taken from the original meaning of “Utopia”, which now suggests either an “ideal” society or an “imaginary” state. For the first time, my work has been inspired by landscapes -  both internal or “imaginary”, and external, even “ideal” locations. I am intrigued by the relationship between our environment and our immediate surroundings - seasons, sun, moon, light, colour - and how they affect our psyche. I am also fascinated by the Chinese Five Elements Theory - Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water - and their interactions: Wood fuels fire, Fire forms earth, Earth contains metal, Metal carries water, Water feeds wood. I have extended my print making technique by incorporating Chine-collé (Chinese paper collage) into my ink drawings.

Margaret Manchee has been a practising artist for more than 10 years, specializing in copper–plate etching and printmaking whilst also maintaining a profession as a qualified Chartered Accountant. Margaret balances the left brain numbers with the right brain art – her own path to wellness. Since her graduation from the University of Melbourne – Victorian College of the Arts, she has been an artist in residence and art teacher at Firestation Print Studio in Armadale just east of Melbourne’s CBD.
