Mali Taylor - Holding Time

 

Mali Taylor is a Melbourne based ceramic artist exploring the parameters of coil formed ceramics within her practice. Born in the Northern Rivers of NSW, Taylor spent her childhood immersed in the beauties of the Australian landscape. Taylor was a recipient of the 2019 Craft Fresh! Sofitel Melbourne On Collins award.

 

Mali’s sculptural works primarily investigate; the connection between the ceramic process and the maker’s state of mind, the materialisation of memories, and nature’s methods of time keeping and historical archiving of past events and environments. Through the methodical and meditative layering of clay, her hand-built sculptures hold time, invoking memories of archaic Australian landscapes. 

 

Mali completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts specialising in object based practice at RMIT (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) in 2019. Upon completion, she has been expanding her practice while undertaking a Masters in Teaching at La Trobe University, majoring in artistic disciplines to further expand her practice and enrich her career within the art industry.  

 

Holding Time, is a selection of hand-built sculptures that preserve time through the methodical and meditative layering evocative of archaic Australian landscapes. The coils are repetitively stacked in a process of making that is a balanced arrangement of the artist’s knowledge and skill. For the artist, the slow methodical and meditative making process silences frenetic city life resulting in free-form structures that evolve and reveal themselves.

 

Taylor continues to experiment with the realisation and formation of emotions and the concept of time through her ceramic practice. She is conscious that her art will outlive her and that just as ceramics are fragile, so are we all.
