AM/PM

This exhibition of recent works by Louise Forthun titled AM/PM examines time through the lens of the city.  The exhibition features this stunning new panorama of Melbourne constructed by the artist, using hand-cut templates and airbrushed acrylic paint. AM/PM also includes works on paper each depicting abstracted fragments of the city as it shifts and changes over night and day.

Forthun is well known for her abstracted views of the urban and industrial city, with many works over the years based on views of the changing Melbourne cityscape.  Using photographs and drawings as her inspiration, she makes meticulously hand cut paper or polypropylene templates. She under paints with areas of block colour and then over paints with spray acrylics to create multilayered effects.  These paintings do not seek to provide a readily identifiable or literal view of the city, but rather explore the fragments, shapes, forms, light and shadow that in the final work read as both abstracted forms and a kind of personal documentation of the urban environment.

Louise Forthun is a Melbourne artist.  Trained in painting at both RMIT and VCA, she has been exhibiting in Australia and overseas since the 1980s and her works are held in major private and public collections.
