Before After Before, 2015

Kate Jones was the recipient of the Sofitel / Craft FRESH! Emerging Craft Practitioners Award in 2014.  The award includes the opportunity for the winning artist to exhibit new work at Sofitel Melbourne On Collins in the following year.

In these new vessels, Jones explores the transitional space between traditional ceramics, sculpture and the two-dimensional surface.   The technically impressive large slab formed pots are delicately painted using slips and glazes of various pastel shades.

“..the mark making and brush strokes are intimately connected with contemporary abstract art, the scale and form of the sculptures lends itself to abstracted industrial architecture, while the drips and splashes immediately bring graf tagging to mind.”  (Ramona Barry and Beck Jobson, ‘Potheads’, Handmade Life, 2014)

Also included in the exhibition were a number of abstract photographic studies of a lived space that Jones used as a reference point for her ceramic works.  These images are ambiguous, providing little sense of a specific time or place, an immaterial counterpoint to the very material world that ceramics inhabit.

Through these new works, Jones continues her interest in how we inhabit the various spaces (real and imagined) in our lives.

Kate Jones was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1966. Working predominantly in clay Jones creates sculptural forms that become canvases for painterly surfaces of slips and glazes. She completed a diploma of Art at Box Hill TAFE in 2011 and an honours year after finishing a BFA at RMIT in 2014. Jones was awarded the Trudie Alfred Bequest in 2013 and has participated in shows including solo shows at Craft Victoria in 2014, Stephen McLaughlan Gallery in 2011 and a Window Space show at Craft Victoria in 2013. Kate Jones lives and works in Melbourne.  She is currently enrolled in a Master of Fine Art by research at RMIT.
