Jon Rendell

Wall & Ground, 2017

 

Jon Rendell (b. 1957) has been making photographs for over forty years and recently began setting himself one-a-day projects to delve more deeply into specific themes.  Melbourne born and raised, Rendell has been living in San Francisco the past twenty-five years.

One of the first themes the artist explored was called 25' RADIUS in 2013.  Twenty-five foot radius referred to the size of his apartment in downtown San Franciso.  Each day Rendell published a photo taken from within the confines of his apartment in an effort to push himself to find inspiration in unexplored compositions and natural light.

A second daily blog, Is This Frisco? (2015), showcased unique vision of the city in which he currently lives.  The 20 photographs in this exhibition are taken from his 2017 series Wall & Ground, where the wall or the ground becomes the canvas for the light and shadows that strikes it.

​

Many of these photos appear abstract as the play of light hints at other forms; familiar, and unfamiliar to us.  Day 31 - Head is actually the shadow on the footpath from a fire hydrant.  Day 221 - It'll Never Get Better if you Picket shows how Rendell likes to insert an element of humour into his images, especially through his titles.  You can also find references to other artists on Days 181 and 226.
